MEMBER NEWS

11th December 2020

Members Update

It's been another positive week at the club with some half-decent weather bringing all our members and guests out to play.

We had some great publicity this week as we hosted another filming session for Golf Barons. They are an outstanding outfit, busy filming for their second season which is due to be aired on Kayo and Fox Sports in the coming months. It is has been great to showcase our golf course, practice facilities and more recently the coaching clinics and work that we are doing to drive participation in the 'All Ability' golf space. I will let you know when these episodes will be aired, there is bound to be a few chuckles as I try and hit balls on my one leg alone! Social media post link here

Focus now turns onto the Club championship finale this weekend! It has been a challenging event so far with the first two rounds being played in testing conditions. Regardless, we have seen some outstanding scoring from all Grades, leaving the deciding rounds wide open. Every single Grade can be won or lost tomorrow (and Sunday). I would urge all members that have time to come down to the club and spur on the players this weekend. Good luck to all players!

In terms or presentations. We are aiming for A Grade Nett - B and C Grade Nett & Gross - Juniors and Captain's trophy winners to all be presented at 6pm on Saturday. Open Club Championship / Women and Senior Men (nett and gross) to be presented at our close to 5.30pm on Sunday.

I hope to see you all over the weekend.

Championship Update!

Things are starting to heat up as we head into the final rounds of the Club Championships this weekend.

Last weekend we had Melbourne's glorious Spring weather to deal with and the challenging conditions proved too much for a number of players in contention after good first rounds.

The overall leader Zak El Kurdi had an excellent 75 in tough conditions to be at 1 under 143 after 36 holes and extended his lead from 4 to 7 shots from Lewis Kendall on 150. Defending champ Imran is lurking at 151 and is well in contention to defend his title. With 36 holes left in the Open Championship there is still a long way to go. We encourage members to follow the top 8 players in Sunday's final round along with the final round of the Women's.

Bianca Findlay holds a 4-shot lead after a solid pair of 82s over the defending champion Joanne Tey.

Heading into the final round for the rest of the grades we have Stephen Mulholland on 165 leading by 4 over Christopher Jones and Carlo Chincarini. A 4-shot lead in B grade can be made up on 1 hole so there is a lot of golf left to be played before deciding the winner. Congratulations to Stephen for winning the December Monthly Medal too!

In C Grade we have a tie at the top with 18 holes remaining, with Neil Bradshaw and Alex Grioli tied at 183. C grade has been known to produce a winner from deep in the pack and if you are within 10 or 15 shots you still have a chance if you shoot anything in the 80s.

Alessandro Cilmi leads the Junior championships by only 2 shots from Joanne Tey and 4 shots from Jesse Trenbath.

There are also a number of Nett championships to be decided and we wish all players the best of luck in their final rounds. Remember the top 8 Nett places qualify for their Grade Matchplay championships in January and February 2021, so there is still plenty for everyone to play for.

In the Senior categories we have Mario Auciello leading the Senior Men's and Bill Findlay leading the Super Senior Men's.

The forecast for both days this weekend looks fantastic (for a change!) so we hope everyone enjoys the sunshine, light winds and our course in arguably its best condition in at least 10 years.

Good luck to everyone over the weekend.

Course Update

Our week was once again dominated by Club Championship preparation with the entire team getting involved in the presentation of the course for the culmination to the premier event of our golfing calendar.

  • This week we fertilised fairways and all green surrounds.
  • Sprayed growth retardant on green surrounds to slow growth and tighten the couch.
  • Topped up sand in bunkers on the 11th  and 14th.
  • Attended to irrigation repairs on 11th and 14th green sprinklers.
  • All bunkers have been trimmed and neatened up as well as sprayed with new herbicide mix which is doing well in keeping the grass and weed growth under control

On behalf of the team, we all hope you enjoy the golf course over the weekend. Good luck to all players in their final rounds of Club Champs!

Play well!

New GPS Screen System In Play!

We are pleased to announce that our new GPS Cart Screens are now in play. These screens are going to enhance your experience when you next hire a golf cart from the club. Utilising the GPS technology we have provided you with your very own caddy giving you yardages to the hole as well as functionality allowing you to pin point a target and obtain those specific yardages (see photo below).

We have also activated our restricted zones around the course. The cart will notify you when you are entering restricted zones and give you instructions (photo below) to merge away from these and remain in operation. Please obey these instructions in the interest of course preservation.

Thank you and enjoy!

Make use of the GPS system for all your yardages on the hole. You can even touch the screen and get yardages to that point and from that point to the green. Enjoy!

Fond Farewells...

We bid farewell to Tara O'Shea this week and as the song goes.. "Sunset over the beaches from now on..." as she heads West to Perth with Kevin, Rory and Willow.

Tara has been working at SLC for the best part of 4 and a half years, as a contractor and employee, and has brought joy and laughter to the clubhouse with her Irish sense of humour. Remembered for the time she won the Mustang in a lucky draw at the local pub, she will be missed by staff and Members alike.

We wish Tara, and her young family well in the next part of her All Aussie Adventure!

Matt Rogers will to be leaving SLGC next week... He has been offered an outstanding opportunity that will see him make a lifestyle change and move his growing family down to the Bellarine Peninsula.

Matt has made a substantial difference in the golf operations of the club over the last 13 months and will be sadly missed by staff and members alike. We wish him all the best for his future on the coast.
