Things are starting to heat up as we head into the final rounds of the Club Championships this weekend.
Last weekend we had Melbourne's glorious Spring weather to deal with and the challenging conditions proved too much for a number of players in contention after good first rounds.
The overall leader Zak El Kurdi had an excellent 75 in tough conditions to be at 1 under 143 after 36 holes and extended his lead from 4 to 7 shots from Lewis Kendall on 150. Defending champ Imran is lurking at 151 and is well in contention to defend his title. With 36 holes left in the Open Championship there is still a long way to go. We encourage members to follow the top 8 players in Sunday's final round along with the final round of the Women's.
Bianca Findlay holds a 4-shot lead after a solid pair of 82s over the defending champion Joanne Tey.
Heading into the final round for the rest of the grades we have Stephen Mulholland on 165 leading by 4 over Christopher Jones and Carlo Chincarini. A 4-shot lead in B grade can be made up on 1 hole so there is a lot of golf left to be played before deciding the winner. Congratulations to Stephen for winning the December Monthly Medal too!
In C Grade we have a tie at the top with 18 holes remaining, with Neil Bradshaw and Alex Grioli tied at 183. C grade has been known to produce a winner from deep in the pack and if you are within 10 or 15 shots you still have a chance if you shoot anything in the 80s.
Alessandro Cilmi leads the Junior championships by only 2 shots from Joanne Tey and 4 shots from Jesse Trenbath.
There are also a number of Nett championships to be decided and we wish all players the best of luck in their final rounds. Remember the top 8 Nett places qualify for their Grade Matchplay championships in January and February 2021, so there is still plenty for everyone to play for.
In the Senior categories we have Mario Auciello leading the Senior Men's and Bill Findlay leading the Super Senior Men's.
The forecast for both days this weekend looks fantastic (for a change!) so we hope everyone enjoys the sunshine, light winds and our course in arguably its best condition in at least 10 years.
Good luck to everyone over the weekend.
From the Club Captain
