Members Update

What a fine week it has been!

For me, it started off with a game of golf in the first Monday 'Club Shotgun' event. It was really good to see all our members gathering 'safely' prior to golf, enjoying a coffee and catching up with old friends and new. The weather was particularly warm on Monday which played a part in the field flocking to the bar after the game for a well deserved 'cold one'. A great atmosphere was experienced at the club and I'm confident this will keep growing to become something to envy for many clubs in the local area and beyond. I managed to follow up this round with a sneaky 9 holes with Anthony before work on Wednesday. I have not managed to do this for quite some time and can honestly say that it was another magical experience and the best way to start the day. There is nothing better than putting over freshly cut greens on a beautiful Summer morning. 

You will also be pleased to hear that it was the last game of golf this week for me and I did actually get back to the grind.  We have an excellent golf course in great condition! You must find the time to get the most out of your membership, play more, meet new members and enjoy your club.

Club Shotgun - 18/01/21

Our second Full 'Cub Shotgun' start Monday competition will be held on Monday 18th Dec.

Teeing off from 9am we are looking for this event to become one of the more social midweek days at the club. We look forward to seeing many members getting involved, meeting other members and enjoying the club atmosphere in the club rooms before and after the golf (restrictions permitting).

Mixed Pairs recommences in 2021

Sanctuary Lakes Mixed Pairs competitions recommenced in January 2021 and will (usually) be held every 2nd Sunday of each month, so make sure you organise your playing partners in advance. Different 2 and 4 person events will be held each month.  For a 2-person event, the team must comprise 1 male and 1 female.  For a 3- or 4-person event, the team must comprise at least one male and at least 1 female per team.

Mixed 4BBB Stableford, Sunday 14th February 2021 - 4BBB Stableford is an event for 2 players competing as partners.  Each player plays his/her own ball, with Stableford points scored based on SLGC handicaps.  The better score of the pair is recorded for each hole. When scores are equal, the ball holed first is recorded.  Men play from the Blue Tees and Women from Red tees. If possible, tee-off between 11.30 am and 12.15 pm, so you can meet fellow competitors in the Norman Room for a drink and the presentation after your game. We look forward to seeing many participants at these fun events.

Golf Victoria Women's Pennant

After a long hiatus, Sanctuary Lakes Golf Club (SLGC) fielded a team in Golf Victoria’s Women’s Pennant 2020; however, it was cancelled after 4 rounds due to COVID-19.  This short-lived season provided valuable experience to many women and girls who had not previously been involved. It is anticipated that Golf Victoria Women’s Pennant 2021 will go ahead with a start date of 21st February 2021, with each team playing 6 Rounds, finishing on 18th April 2021.  SLGC has a BYE for the first round.  SLGC’s first Contest is at 12.20pm on Sunday 28th February 2021 at Medway GC against Box Hill GC. This is a call out to Members to be involved as a player (note, it is anticipated that a handicap of approx. 18 or less will be required to get a game) or as a caddy.  Note, players or caddies need not be available for all Contests.To express your interest in SLGC Women’s Pennant, please contact:  club@sanctuarylakesclub.com.au

North West Senior Pennant

NW Senior Pennant open to players who are 55 years of age at the 1st January 2021. Rounds are played on a Friday. All teams play at the one venue with a rotation of venues each week.

Format for the competition is as follows:

  • A Grade: 2 x GA Handicap of 0 - 9.4
  • B Grade: 3 x GA Handicap of 9.5 - 14.4
  • C Grade: 3 x GA Handicap of 14.5 +

The first round is to be held at Gisborne on Friday 19 Feb 2021, where Sanctuary Lakes play Mandalay at 11:30. Click here for full draw for the season.

Golf Course Update

Apart from regular maintenance of the playing surfaces the team also managed to work on the following areas in the week.


Bunkers  - The team spent a lot of time on the bunkers this week. All bunkers have been edged,  had their sand levels topped up and any surface weeds / grasses have been sprayed. These will die away in a few days time.

Irrigation - A 'hot' topic at the moment with allot of time and resource being spent on the system lately. We replaced 3 decoders this week as well as sprinklers on the 4th fairway, 16th fairway, 18th fairway and the  5th tee complex. We also replaced a damaged communications wire to 2 sprinklers on the 16th fairway.

Fairways - All fairways have had a periodical application of fertiliser this week.

18th Green Surround - This problematic area has eventually showed signs of regeneration after an application of a new chemical which helps turf that is struggling with salinity problems. We took the opportunity to scarify, top-dress and fertilise this area to help boost the growth. (See photos below)

Following a break over Christmas we are looking to start our All-Ability tuition again. we will be running these clinics on the first Monday of every month starting in February. These sessions will last 2 hours.

Women & Girl's Coaching Opportunities 

Following some good results before Christmas we are looking to maintain our momentum and run Women and Girl's clinics every Wednesday and Sunday at 10.30am for an hour. Beginner and Intermediate welcome . Follow the link to book

Following the success of the Short Game Masterclass in November,  Marcus is hosting a Bunker Masterclass on Friday 29th January for members who need some assistance escaping those pesky sand traps.

The class will have a key focus on the technique to improve golfers bunker shots from a variety of distances and lies ranging from the dreaded "fried egg" through to a hardpan lie where there is minimal sand under the ball.

Marcus' years of Tour experience will be on display as he demonstrates the correct grip, set up and ball position and shows you just how easy bunker shots can be.  They are shots that strike fear into the hearts of most golfers but armed with some newly acquired knowledge you'll be escaping them with no issues.


There will be two sessions available to book. The first class runs 3pm - 4:30pm followed by 5pm-6:30pm. The cost is $80pp and classes will be limited to a maximum of 4 members per session.
